Gr 4–6—Written in the present tense, each title describes the typical experiences of an animal or group, with facts woven into the narrative. Some entries focus on one individual experience;
Harp Seals follows a pup from birth to its first migration. Others look at broader groups, such as a mob of meerkats or an elephant herd. Information about feeding, social interactions, survival techniques, and other behaviors is highlighted in the text. For instance,
Elephants discusses foraging and nursing and features an encounter with a crocodile and a death. Photographs are decent but of limited use. Most images of meerkats and chimpanzees, for example, depict a single animal rather than group scenes representing their social structures.
VERDICT Narrative-based presentation may draw some readers less interested in straight facts and statistics. Robust collections may want to consider.
