PreS-Gr 2–Perseverance prevails in this uplifting picture book from the creators of
The Worrysaurus and
The Hugasaurus. The titular dinosaur is overjoyed to be astride her very own bicycle and is eager to enter and win a riding competition. However, doubts emerge as she wobbles, falls, and struggles to stay on two wheels. As all hope seems lost, Grannysaur zooms by on her own bicycle, dries up the child’s tears, and shares her own challenges when learning to ride. Granny emphasizes how important it is to not give up and persist when trying something new, leading to a triumphant and touching joy ride during Biking Fun Day. Bright’s rhyming text is uplifting while also acknowledging the obstacles, both physical and emotional, that accompany attempting new skills. Chatterton’s tender illustrations use a calming palette that is both colorful and soothing.
VERDICT With lessons of encouragement and persistence, this tale is a warm and welcome addition to social-emotional health collections.
