Gr 2-5–Hugh Oxley dreams of becoming a famous singer, but there’s just one problem: on the farm where he lives, only the chickens and sheep can hear his beautiful voice. When the young cow learns that the talent competition “Amoorica’s Next Big Thing” is having auditions, he knows this is his big chance. Naive, trusting, and kind, Hugh heads to the big city to try his luck. With the help of a wise-cracking rat, he finds his way and forms a band with three other misfit hopefuls. Hugh must gain confidence in his ability, earn the trust of his new bandmates, and avoid the pranks and pitfalls thrown at him by his squirrely competition. While this title may tread familiar ground, it is sweet and funny, nonetheless. Hugh’s ability to see the best in everyone he meets (including a rat digging in the garbage) is refreshing. The cows manage to be diverse while still looking like cows; young readers will find their different styles and personalities relatable. The dialogue is snappy and the art is bright and appealing. The characters’ facial expressions are particularly well-drawn.
VERDICT This graphic novel is recommended for readers who enjoy John Patrick Green’s “InvestiGators” and Eric Geron’s and Jannie Ho's “Fry Guys.”
