Gr 3-7–Ash has one goal: to take down all the champions so he can be the “Number One Fighter.” He has been traveling from village to village, fighting and defeating other champions while earning the nickname “The Littlest Fighter” because of his short stature, which he uses to his advantage. After a recent victory, Ash meets Dot, who tries to teach Ash that fighting isn’t always a good thing when people get hurt and buildings get smashed. Dot explains to Ash that he can use his strength to help others when they’re in trouble. Ash is able to put that philosophy into action when a new fighter seeks him out for a showdown. The art contains bright colors for the fighters, while large sound effects shown in tandem with darker tones represent the results of the fights. Overall, children will learn about the complex reasons for violence and the straightforward consequences surrounding it.
VERDICT This short yet fun graphic narrative about fighting and its consequences is a must-buy for school and public libraries serving children.
