K-Gr 4–With its retro comic style and its hard-hitting facts, this book is a valuable addition to any elementary nonfiction collection. Each deadly snake (there are seven) is given its own section, which culminates in a detailed description of what happens if it bites. The book pulls no punches, explaining just how deadly some snakes can be. At the end of the book is a Death-O-Meter that sums up the effectiveness of each snake’s venom. The combination of exciting facts, humor, and stylish art make it an exciting paired-reading book and will likely inspire younger readers to stretch and challenge their reading ability. Aside from exciting facts on each page, the pictures and captions are wonderfully funny and witty. This book is part of a six-book series by Rice that also includes
The Deadliest: Flower and
The Deadliest: Insect.
VERDICT Young readers will be motivated to engage with science in the latest edition of this series.
