Gr 6–8—This series explores how history, geography, economics, and immigration have shaped what and how we eat. Each title begins with a list of icons for readers to note within the text—highlighting vocabulary, sidebars, videos, questions, and research projects. Chapters are co-named for meal courses—i.e., appetizer, main (or first) course, second course, dessert. Following each "course" are images and descriptions of ingredients, preparation, and cultural significance. Most volumes conclude with at least one recipe. Numerous photographs, artworks, and quotes provide rich context, as do easy-to-digest "language lessons" (e.g., food names).
VERDICT Readers will learn much about the food they love or yearn to sample. Maybe not a first purchase, but noteworthy for its expansive coverage and usefulness for history units.
