Gr 2–5—Human problem-solving meets feats of modern engineering. Within each volume, curious readers will discover real-life situations where scientists and engineers used critical thinking to find solutions to problems as wide-ranging as how to reuse rockets to how to build wildlife crossings that protect both animals and people. While the sentences are a bit choppy, readers should find them straightforward and easy to understand, and amid the many photographs are the occasional gems that students will find fascinating, including one of a mummy's prosthetic toe. Educators will appreciate the critical thinking activity at the conclusion of each book, which empowers kids to be problem-solvers and encourages independent research.
VERDICT A welcome addition to STEM shelves.
