Gr 10 Up–James is the most recent survivor of the terrifying but unknown phenomenon plaguing the quiet Midwestern town of Archer’s Peak. He managed to escape an attack at a sleepover that killed three of his friends. With the death toll climbing and no leads, James is suspect number one. But the brutal deaths and traceless disappearances seem to be the work of something far more monstrous than a teenage boy. Enter Erica Slaughter, a pierced and platinum-blonde vigilante who appears to be the only one who knows what is troubling this small town. With the police and a vengeful brother of a missing girl on their tail, Erica and James team up to find out what is killing the children—and what they find is terrifying. Full of monsters and mystery, Tynion’s story is well plotted, with bizarre discoveries and strong characters. The denouement is satisfyingly dramatic while leaving plenty of intrigue for further volumes. Dell’Edera’s illustrations reflect the intense tone; his often stoic characters and muted tones are set into sharp relief when the onomatopoeic violence erupts with splashes of neon blood. Profanity and gore make this a fit for older teens with an established love of the horror genre.
VERDICT Sure to entice Stephen King or Stranger Things fans looking for their next obsession.
