Gr 5 Up–Young readers curious about the history of mummies and their discoveries will love this informative title. Divided into geographical sections (Africa, Americas, Europe and the Middle East, and Asia) with a sidebar to remind readers of the location, the book describes the clothing and condition of each mummy upon discovery, and other intriguing details. For example, using modern DNA testing and CT scans, researchers can determine a mummified person’s age at their time of death, their living conditions, social and religious beliefs, major health conditions, and even what they had for a last meal. The section on Egyptian mummies contains a very detailed description of the mummification process and ancient Egyptians’ beliefs about the afterlife. Additional material on the history of pyramids is also included. Subsequent sections on mummies focus attention on lesser-known discoveries and their fascinating histories. Written in kid-friendly language, this text educates young readers on ancient civilizations that extend well beyond the time of the Pyramids. Ancient civilizations’ beliefs and death rites are described with respect and honor. The colored illustrations have just enough age-appropriate detail to make them informative without frightening sensitive readers. An introductory chapter, glossary, index, and world map showing where the mummies were discovered accompany the text.
VERDICT This title does a splendid job of opening ancient worlds to younger readers; it’s a useful addition to nonfiction collections in schools and public libraries.
