Gr 3-5–This brightly colored, informative title for older elementary readers showcases 50 female athletes to inspire the next generation of Olympians. Most of the featured sportswomen are British, with a large percentage being athletes with disabilities; the author herself is featured due to her position as a two-time Paralympic gold medalist in archery. There is also mention of specific mental health struggles unique to athletes. Each woman is given two pages with a summary of their lives and accomplishments, an illustration, a quote, and a “Did You Know?” blurb. The pictures and backgrounds resemble the beginning animation of a sports video game that may appeal to its young audience. Seeing a diverse range of women performing at the top of their respective sports will surely encourage readers to try new things.
VERDICT A well-formulated biographical overview, highlighting talented athletes who don’t fall into molds easily. A general purchase.
