Gr 3-5–Twenty different pets of famous scientists, artists, writers, and musicians are highlighted in this book. Students learn about Grip, Charles Dickens’s talking raven, who was the inspiration for the raven in Barnaby Rudge and Diamond, Isaac Newton’s dog, who accidentally burned all his research. The pets include familiar animals (dogs and cats) and unique creatures (the crocodiles of Dorothy Parker). Each spread discusses the animal and features a mini biography of the famous human. The book shares how many of the animals were immortalized in the work of their caretaker. While the profiled people may not be familiar to most readers, they will enjoy reading about the pets. The illustrations contain close-ups of the person along with their pet.
VERDICT This charming book offers new insight on an interesting topic.
