K-Gr 3–In this fictionalized telling of a fascinating process, Gabriela’s grandfather was once a turtle egg hunter but is now a passionate toruguero, someone who protects turtle eggs and shepherds new hatchlings back to the sea. Gabriela accompanies Papá Grande as they care for a set of eggs—a nidada—looking out for the many predators who can interrupt the life journey for creatures whose future is imperiled at every stage. This reality makes the survivors’ story all the more engaging, as the tiny hatchlings who do make it back to the water may go on to repeat the life cycle. Years later when it is time to breed, many females will return to the same spot where their lives began to make their own nests in the sand. The fact that mother sea turtles do not stay to nurture their young is dealt with in a subtle way—she “will leave once she’s finished egg-laying”—that may require further explanation for young readers. Golden hues of the sandy beach contrast with the blue and green tones for the water, beautifully depicting the setting. A map, a clear life cycle diagram, and comprehensive glossary adds to the educational value.
VERDICT This book is a rich resource for STEM learning and will inspire young readers to investigate and even engage in conservation activities.
