Toddler-PreS–On a cold winter’s night, a little boy can’t sleep because he has lost something. When he gets out of his warm bed, he looks out his window to see—a pterosaur? He yells hello and gets on the pterosaur’s back to fly high above the city to search for what he’s lost. The pterosaur takes him through the city, over a park, and along the dark river until they come upon a passenger boat. The pterosaur swoops down and picks up the boy’s fathers to fly majestically through the dark night, against the white moon, soaring until the child falls. He wakes up in his bed, with both fathers there to give him a hug and kiss goodnight. Moore writes this warm story about missing parents (not lost, but simply on a date night out) with lovely text, opening with an emotionally evocative line that sets the tone: “On the coldest night, I know our window glows warmly because of us, inside.” Uchendu’s digital illustrations portray a cold night in a big city with wind-swept art that seems to drop readers into a dream. The child and his fathers are Black, as is the grandma, gently looking on. It’s a wonderful bedtime read for everyone.
VERDICT A great purchase to add to a bedtime collection, and an excellent add to diversify collections or use as a writing prompt in classrooms.
