Gr 4-6–Something’s wrong with the Giant Omelette. Once a magical source of food for the Neopets in Tyrannia, it now only causes the Ugga-Ugga illness. This is unacceptable to Sabre-X, who along with allies like the exiled faerie Seraphina, head out to restore its powers. Mix wraps a standard story of restoration around the Giant Omelette mechanic from the virtual game, Neopets. While the character motivations and repercussions of this event are serious, they are always dealt with in a forthright and child-friendly way. Readers will appreciate that this graphic novel matches the tone of the game. While character backstories are solid, they are revealed in a forced manner. Growth ultimately feels unearned due to the story’s brisk pacing and some panel flow issues. The comic’s greatest appeal lies in its art, which remains faithful to the original. Fans will enjoy seeing so many of the Neopians in their world, as well as the references to other content.
VERDICT This would feel right at home as an in-game comic, but outside of its fans, it may not stand as well.
