Gr 3-7–Woolf’s biography covers Armstrong’s life from his birth in 1930 until his death in 2012. Information about his pre-NASA career focuses on his lifelong dedication to the history and future of flight. Each chapter is peppered with asides, such as a story about how Armstrong’s parents appeared on the television game show I’ve Got a Secret. Woolf also includes detailed information about each of the airplanes that Armstrong learned to fly, including the length of each aircraft and the top speed it could reach. The black-and-white illustrations help readers imagine Armstrong’s life in better detail.
VERDICT The “Trailblazers” series is the next step up from the “Who Is?” titles, in terms of the length and the depth of information. Recommended for any children’s collection.
