Gr 10 Up–Though the area of Southbunch has always had a reputation for being unsafe, a recent string of murders on Ira Street has really got people freaked out—especially Shavonne, a struggling author. As of late, he’s become acquainted with a neighbor in his building named Lewellyn, who is an odd duck, but an attractive one. However, when Shavonne is over at Lewellyn’s apartment for dinner, he makes a gruesome discovery that throws him for a loop. Could the beautiful, alluring Lewellyn be the killer? The creative team masterfully sets the mood throughout this debut volume. There’s an eeriness permeating the entire narrative, and the plot unfolds without revealing too much in the way of possibilities. The artwork is catchy and reflective of the webtoon art style. There are expletives sprinkled throughout, though they mostly use grawlix to censor, and there are a few moments of mature sex talk. All in all, however, mature readers will enjoy this LGBTQIA+ mystery romance and fresh take on whodunit fiction.
VERDICT Though it can occasionally push the envelope with its content, this first volume is a fun, new take on murder mysteries that will keep readers guessing, even when they think they’ve got it all figured out.
