Gr 2-5–In this second book in the series about animals with “superpowers,” a nameless woman identifies and explains what is remarkable about moles, as exemplified by a mole she calls Rosalie. As in the previous edition (
Beavers), the narrator introduces each superpower, or trait, by describing it as a special ability and then explaining how it works. Text boxes and quizzes are interspersed throughout and add a bit of fun. The illustrations, which have a vintage look to them, alternate between comic depictions and detailed diagrams that identify different physical features of moles and their habitats. The text remains friendly, though some terms, such as “indefatigable paws of power” may reach over the heads of most readers. The book lacks a table of contents, which may be troublesome for students who are doing reports. It does include a clear glossary and a detailed “further reading” section.
VERDICT A serviceable resource regarding moles, which are otherwise underrepresented
