Gr 3-6–Siegel provides a thorough account of the Mayflower. Details about specific events and people are interspersed among facts about the ship, its cargo, and the crew. Quotes from primary sources such as letters and pamphlets are also included. The legends of Plymouth Rock and the first Thanksgiving are addressed. Notably, this book presents an accurate account of the settlers’ effect on the area’s Native tribes. The true story of the relationship between the settlers and the Indigenous community is depicted in an honest and unbiased manner. Siegel worked with members of the Wampanoag Tribe to ensure an accurate portrayal of Native people in the text and the illustrations. A time line, an index, an author’s note, and further reading suggestions are shared.
VERDICT A serviceable resource to update libraries’ collections focusing on the history of early settlers and pilgrims.
