Majestic Mountains: Discover Earth’s Mighty Peaks

Orange Mosquito. Oct. 2022. 48p. Tr $19.95. ISBN 9781914519307.
PreS-Gr 2–Vivid illustrations show the variety of life on different mountain peaks around the world, but there is little information to back up the illustrations; in the name of vibrant presentation, the book sacrifices clarity. Every spread has a short paragraph of facts about the featured mountain but sometimes the text doesn’t match the picture, e.g., the spread on the Chocolate Hills in the Philippines shows the marsupials known as the sugar gliders in a full-page illustration, but there is no mention of them in the text. The artwork is striking and colorful, but not realistic, which in a work of nonfiction is confusing. A highly stylized map at the beginning of the book of “mountains” of the world is misleading—the White Sands National Park, which are really sand dunes—appears to be on the east coast of the United States, when in reality, they are in New Mexico. Some fun pages offer opportunities to search for animals.
VERDICT Light on facts and clarity, this book is an additional purchase.
