Gr 3-5–Socorro and her brother, Paco, tell their story in alternating chapters in this historical fiction novel. Set during the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath, the siblings learn that life is challenging during war, facing hunger and fear, and even after war, facing the stigma of having a man in exile for a father. The story follows as the two children grow up and come to terms with what it means to be different—from each other, their peers, and what their father remembers of them.

VERDICT A stirring novel about a time not often portrayed in middle grade novels.
