K-Gr 5–Full of heart and humor, this biography of beloved James Marshall is an endearing read. Using short chapters that capture Marshall’s brilliance and his belief in the intelligence of children, Connors honors the wit and humor of Marshall’s art and storytelling. Throughout the book, characters from Marshall’s creations (as well as characters that could easily fit into his vision) fill the brightly colored pages. Marshall is depicted as a fox named Jim, and his partner Billy is a charming cat who is supportive as Jim seeks to create his stories and engage with his audience. Marshall’s desire to be recognized as a serious artist is highlighted in a tender chapter in the middle of the book. Also covered is the significance of Billy in his life, his friendships with Maurice Sendak and Arnold Lobel, and the tale of how Miss Viola Swamp came into the world. The final tale poses the question, while he is in the hospital, of whether children will know where he went. True to form, Marshall remembers how smart his audience is and knows they will figure it out. Back matter includes a time line and additional information for each of the six chapters that make up this biography.
VERDICT A wonderful tribute to the creator of characters and stories that are still loved today. The format will be useful for modeling classroom activities when children face the task of writing a biography or autobiography.
