Gr 3-5–A short, brightly colored introduction to the world of crime-fighting, this informational picture book by UK detective Beever may seem more at home with the comics at first glance, and that’s not a bad thing. The collages of simply shaped buildings and two-dimensional people give what could be dark subject matter a primary-colored life. A table of contents, many “did you know” blurbs, and explanations of necessary education help readers discover where their interests may lie. Adults should be aware there are depictions of various crime scenes and weapons but nothing graphic. The author’s intention is clearly to get children interested in detective work and not scare them away. A list of alternative careers that involve solving crimes gives children options and food for thought.
VERDICT A kid-friendly introduction to the not-so-friendly world of crime-fighting.
