Gr 1-4–A love letter to the Himalayas and the memories of co-author Surishtha Sehgal of growing up and spending summers at base camps which are small towns at the base of steep mountains that attract worldwide climbers. This bedtime story is similar to Goodnight Moon, except this narrator is not a baby. She is older and more traveled. Beautiful, tranquil colors highlight the mountains’ magic. Hindi words are used and translated, and fact boxes appear on each spread that offer facts about the region; for example, yaks are mammals native to Kashmir and they can live at the very highest of altitudes. The stars in the Himalayas appear grander and closer, almost within grasp because no city lights dim them. This idyllic landscape is captured in serene but glorious tones of purple and blue as the sun sets. Artfully designed and a lovely read, this book will introduce readers to a part of the world that many children may not know well.
VERDICT A solid choice for lower elementary readers and a book that will look great on displays—this may become the most circulated work of this genre due to the cover and art.
