Gr 9 Up–When Miyako was a little girl, a giant kaiju emerged from the sea and destroyed her entire town. The event left an indelible mark on her and the village, ushering in years of trauma but also prosperity in the form of tourism and abundant seafood markets. Ten years later, monsters emerge and entangle Miyako and her town once more. Now a young adult, Miyako is also deeply connected to these kaiju in other mysterious ways. There are elements of Naoki Urasawa’s series “Asadora!” where the main character forfeits their childhood in the fight against kaiju. The side characters alongside Miyako are intriguing, and readers will want to invest more time with them. KENT’s illustrations pleasantly blend large-scale monster action sequences with cartoonish and elaborate facial expressions. The result is an entertaining manga experience that takes readers on a wild ride.
VERDICT A good addition for libraries looking for intriguing monster stories and anywhere Urasawa’s works circulate well.
