Gr 3-5–Messner puts her skillful spin on this little known story of the rivalry between two rock climbing pioneers. No height was too high for rock climbers Royal Robbins and Warren Harding, who, in the 1950s, began trying to outdo each other on various peaks in Yosemite National Park. The story demonstrates the power of friendly competition to help us (literally) reach new heights. Although it is difficult to fully capture the danger and excitement of rock climbing in a picture book, Messner and Lewis do a solid job. Messner’s descriptive language and engaging narration bring readers close to the action, while digital illustrations make the majestic rock formations come alive for readers who have never had the pleasure of visiting them.
VERDICT Recommended where rock climbing or national parks books are popular.
