Gr 1-4–In this informative picture book, readers are introduced to the dwellings of 20 different animals from all over the globe. Paired with gorgeous watercolor illustrations, entries about each animal provide unique insight into their means of survival. Ranging in size from the robust bald eagle down to the miniscule cathedral termite, all of the creatures highlighted have unique attributes that are crucial to their survival. Some animals are born with these traits, and the text explains why these adaptations exist. For example, a sloth’s long claws act like hooks so it can hang from branches and its fur grows in a downward direction so rain can easily drip off. An array of habitats are presented, informing readers how animals have evolved to assimilate to their diverse environments. Instead of focusing on how climate change has endangered wildlife, Unwin concludes by sharing why their endurance is so crucial.
VERDICT A strong addition wherever animal and ecology books are popular.
