Gr 2-4–This second title in the series focuses on Fern and friends as they try to help a fallen tree. After a storm knocks Tree over, a variety of forest-dwellers think up ways to get Log upright so it can be a tree again. Ideas range from Slug making a slippery trail to slide Log back into place to Moth luring in larger animals and everyone attaching them to Log and having them pull it upright. The digitally rendered illustrations show various species usually found around a nurse log. There are diagrams of the featured species, as well as an interactive activity for readers to find the moths hidden among a group of butterflies. For readers who enjoy wordplay, there are numerous puns like “fern-ally figured it out” and “I don’t lichen this!” Along with learning about the adaptive camouflage of moths and the mycelium network of mushrooms, readers will also discover that lichen are actually “a close partnership between a fungus and an alga.”
VERDICT A great fit for readers who enjoy the style of “Owly” graphic novels, while also serving as an introduction to the forest ecosystem of a nurse log for classroom units and individual interest.
