Gr 4 Up–A humorous, brightly colored adventure comic that follows brothers Feefs and Meems, two talking ferrets who want to explore what is beyond their home on Dook Dook Island. When they create a way to travel to other parts of their planet using forbidden blueprints and special jewels, the two ferrets soon find themselves on modern-day Earth instead. Rescued and taken into the local animal shelter, they are adopted by animal-loving Liza—but only after Liza passes Meems’s test that she is a good creature and up to the task of helping them. An adventure with adorable, talking ferrets is a welcome distraction for Liza, who recently lost a pet. Liza’s older brother has also been watching her while her mom is away, after her father moved out. While the main plot of the book is Liza helping the two ferrets get back home, it is the interactions, both through the dialogue and the art, of the ferret brothers and Liza that make this book shine. Out of the two brothers, Meems is the intellectual; he’s shorter, wears goggles on his head, and can often be seen wearing a tool belt. Feefs is taller, with big, round eyes and has a happy disposition. All human characters present as white.
VERDICT With an already big following from its publication as a webcomic, this is sure to be a crowd-pleaser in most middle grade graphic novel collections. Readers will eagerly await volume two of this series.
