Gr 1-3–Well-researched and beautifully illustrated, this biography of Fanny Goldstein introduces young readers to a tenacious and kind young girl; she grew up to be a strong and independent woman who believed that embracing and amplifying our cultures could make friends of us all. The first Jewish library director in America created opportunities for herself, other young women, and her community throughout her life. Goldstein’s remarkable achievements came in a time when women were often overlooked and she paved the way for a celebration and acknowledgment of Jewish culture that exists to this day. Soft historically accurate illustrations lead readers through the biographical content as Goldstein grows. The one thing missing from the text is Fanny’s last name; this can be found on the final page of the book in a signed quote and within the bibliography. A true pioneer of inclusion, Fanny’s story represents respect for all cultures, not just her own.
VERDICT A nice biographical introduction of an amazing woman and a good selection for a well-rounded collection.
