Gr 2–5—Ten experiments per volume include some new and interesting activities alongside lots of old favorites. Cartoony illustrations up the energy, with diverse characters demonstrating steps and offering "How Does It Work" sidebars. Many experiments, such as those involving surface tension or refraction, can be assembled and executed on-the-spot, although some, such as the ever-popular "rubber egg," require an overnight wait, and one or two, including a re-creation of Pavlov's famous drooling dog experiment, take place over several days. Most experiments are of the "look what happens" variety, skipping any formal prediction or measurement steps.
Living Things is perhaps the standout, with lots of experiments that can be extended or repeated, or that teach readers about their own senses. Introductory pages that emphasize eco-friendliness as well as safety are consistent with the heavy use of recycled materials.
VERDICT This series provides fun one- and two-person activities, with adult supervision.
