Gr 7 Up–Hiruno-kun has been stressing about his major test for weeks only to receive back an abysmal score that lands him in study hall. The only saving grace is that his compatriot who is joining him in test corrections is his crush—the supposedly smart and amazingly talented idol star, Kuromiya-San. It turns out Kuromiya-San has fallen behind in her studies, and she’s not the girl genius her fans believe her to be. The bold lines and unusual texturing add a refreshing touch to the illustration style, setting it apart from stories with similar premises. The creator dedicates much of the panel space to close-ups and adorable facial expressions, while the story doesn’t stray too far from the characters in their desks in conversation.
VERDICT This title doesn’t break much new ground in the genre of school-aged idol romances, but it is sweet enough that romance fans may find appeal from the building relationship between the two leads.
