Gr 4-7–An encyclopedic atlas in saturated primary colors, this text-heavy reference book for kids is a great introduction to endangered species. These heavy topics are given definitions in kid-friendly vocabulary, and illustrator Caldwell inserts an explorer to tie a narrative together. Photographs add a sense of realism to the mostly illustrated book. After an explanation of the terms endangered and species, each page is organized by different locations. The Himalayas, the Indonesian rain forest, the Australian outback, and even the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are given their dues, along with many other locales throughout the world. Not only are readers introduced to animals from these regions but they are also given information on what led to their endangerment.
VERDICT A fantastic guide for kids already fascinated by animals and great choice for those who want to learn more.
