Gr 7 Up–The mental, social, and physical health of young African American women is the primary focus of this work. Confidence, beauty, work, resilience, friends, and family are themes that are highlighted throughout. Each chapter opens with inspiring quotes from notable African American women. The figures included in this text come from every segment of the African and African American diaspora. Along the way, there are thought reflection spaces for girls to learn new affirmations related to that chapter. The author also provides a primer on goal setting that works in tandem with the affirmations. The text aims to help African American women and girls envision a future where there is space for their ideas, dreams, and goals.
VERDICT Fievre gives readers the inspiration they need to craft their own version of Black girl magic; she provides a self-care road map but firmly puts teens in the driver’s seat. This is an ideal title for public and high school libraries.
