PreS-Gr 2–Vasti is the last student left in her art class, and her teacher finds her glaring at her paper. After she declares that she can’t draw anything, her art teacher encourages her just to start with a mark. She angrily stabs her pencil onto her paper and writes her name at her teacher’s request. A week later, Vasti returns to see her dot not only posted behind her teacher’s desk, but also surrounded by a gold frame! The girl is inspired to make more dots. Some are small and some are large. She mixes yellow and blue to make a green dot. Soon she is drawing all types of dots. She paints a dot without even painting a dot. In her school’s art exhibition, Vasti’s dots are all anyone talks about. One small boy looks on and tells Vasti that he could never be an artist like her. She encourages him to make his mark. Readers of all ages will appreciate the encouraging lessen of creativity and trust in this modern picture book classic. The Spanish edition is just as inspiring as The Dot. Reynolds’s loose lines and spare text make this a great read-aloud and a key text for art teachers across grade levels.
