K-Gr 3–A young boy and his father have the best camping trip ever, even as things don’t go as they plan in this fun Spanish-language graphic novel for emerging readers. As he arrives home from school, a young boy finds Papá making the final preparations for their camping trip. They set off, sure this will be a wonderful adventure. When they arrive at the campsite, it’s already full, but no worries! There’s another campsite nearby, although this one doesn’t have as many trees and is more exposed to the elements. When father and son start setting up the tent, they realize that they left the tent poles back home. Again, that’s no problem! They don’t have too much luck with fishing, but there’s plenty of jelly and peanut butter for their favorite sandwiches. And as they enjoy their final night, they get a bit of rain, but some quick thinking prevents them from getting soaked. Cepeda’s large, rich illustrations and clear text in speech bubbles make this an entertaining work for children learning to read independently. The young boy and his papá are clearly excited, as is shown by the many exclamations in speech, and the father’s positive outlook carries through to his son as they face obstacles but continue to enjoy themselves.
VERDICT A cheerful early reader graphic novel full of happiness and positivity that would be an excellent addition to all Spanish-language collections for children.
