Gr 5 Up–His poetry and short stories have haunted American literature for years and garnered new fans with every spooky season or Netflix adaptation—but who was Edgar Allan Poe? In the latest addition to the “Voices in Poetry” series, the life and writing of Poe are explored with samples of his works interspersed within the biographical information. This book is attractively assembled with plenty of photos, illustrations, large quotations, and excerpts to break up the informational text. It is organized chronologically starting with Poe’s orphaned beginnings and then his complex later years. Each section is short and straightforward and then includes either some poetry or a snippet from one of his short stories that mirrored his life experiences. This a brief biography, but it gives an excellent overview for younger children being introduced to his works to learn more about him.
VERDICT An excellent purchase for elementary and middle school library collections where accessible and well-organized biographies written for younger students would be beneficial to the collection.
