Gr 6–8—Science and folklore come together to explain the auroras. Galat generalizes cultural folkloric interpretations regionally, and in some cases by country, and punctuates these with specific tales. The text moves along at a slow, careful pace and is chock- full of data. However, the overall package is puzzling in two ways. First, the combination of more advanced text, presumably for older readers, with Bennett's illustrations (for younger readers) is a mismatch. Second, the publisher "disclaims any liability in connection with the use of this information"—an odd addition.
VERDICT Skip it. Without documentation or sources, this title will be of little value to students.
