Deepening Digital Citizenship: A Guide to Systemwide Policy and Practice

Digital citizenship, a nebulous and slippery topic, is often difficult for teachers and librarians to implement. This text expounds on how to introduce digital citizenship from the top down and encourages districts to find out what they define as digital scholarship, what their needs are, and how to address the needs for the population they serve. For instance, if they have a large refugee population, or a strong neurodivergent contingent, districts can assess their needs and put goals in place for educators and leaders, and for what the students need at the practical level. The lens first focuses on how educational leaders can make systemwide change; then, on how to educate those who will implement the curriculum and what that looks like at the ground level. The authors encourage educators to analyze what their district or school needs and to work with every student in mind. Though the book is academic, it lacks the oppressiveness of academic writing. Packed with resources, standards, questions to help educators tailor their programs, and examples including case studies, this book attempts to demystify the topic of digital citizenship and what that means to education leaders as they sit down and try to address the needs of a district, school, or students.
