Gr 4-8–What if mythical creatures, such as trolls, unicorns, and pixies, had their own hospital where human beings weren’t welcome? Kara Orc has been trying to please her mother, the great Dr. Orc, since she was a small child. She has studied hard, worked hard, and became the doctor her mother wanted. But it never seems to be enough. When they discover a small human wedged on the bottom of an ailing giant’s foot, Kara goes against her mother’s wishes and treats him at Creature Clinic. She knows it’s not a good idea, but as a doctor, she feels she must treat all creatures—even humans. Though the plot starts slowly, with a lot of time spent on the stories of the various patients, once the momentum builds, the pacing takes over, culminating in an exciting climax. Than’s graphic novel features strong characterization, complemented by dynamic artwork. Bold colors throughout give the story a lively feel.
VERDICT This imaginative tale will delight middle grade readers, making it a fun addition to all library collections.
