K-Gr 2—In three books in this series, the featured animal addresses readers in rhyming couplets. (
Grace the Green Sea Turtle contains a nonrhyming description of a sea turtle's journey to lay eggs.) A snake explains why its family is important, while a gecko highlights the appeal of its relatives: "Around the world, we are kept as pets. Excuse me for boasting, but how cute can you get?" Though sometimes forced, the rhymes provide a different approach to animal series books. They work best in
Crafty Crocodiles, where the sly narrator extends an invitation that kids should clearly refuse: "Come meet my family, they're a friendly bunch. We'd love you to stay for a bite of lunch." Clean layouts include a strong variety of photographs; many bolster the text with excellent visual support.
VERDICT The mixture of rhymes, facts, and photos may engage some young readers. Robust collections will want to select as needed.
