Gr 6–8—Not your typical government fare, this series takes readers beyond the three branches of the American political system and exposes common tactics decision makers use to push legislation through or halt it. While all of these practices have existed since our nation's founding (with roots in British law), they have gained popularity in recent decades. Each technique is explored historically and currently, with copious examples of controversies and debates surrounding their use. Critical thinking questions appear throughout, as does a "Power of the People" section, which provides supplemental information about real events supporting the discussion. Additionally, the author suggests ways to engage in activism.
VERDICT Useful as a supplement to existing government collections for its different perspective.
