Gr 7 Up–Ever since the huge cubes appeared in the sky, young people ages 11–20 have reason to be afraid. Every few days, smaller cubes drop down from the larger ones and take 36 kids back inside. Information coming out of the cubes is rare, and the people taken are never seen again. The large cubes do not respond to any communication, and they are impervious to even the strongest military weapons. Liam’s brother Tommy was recently taken, and Liam is not going to give up on him. Uniting with old friends and new, Liam begins to work on a plan to not only save his brother but break out as many others as he can. Maybe he can solve the mystery of their disappearance as well. The premise of this story feels familiar, but adding the spin of it affecting only the young gives it more drama and a sense of urgency. The characters’ unique backgrounds and skills allow everyone to play an important role.
VERDICT The action of this story is intense, and the art is vibrant and energetic enough to make it a page-turner. The confidence of the main characters will empower readers to stand up for their convictions and work together as a team.
