Gr 1-4–From the “See Yourself in Their Stories” series comes this collection of biographies that spotlights the complexities of Latinx peoples, identities, and significance. This volume covers political activists, visual artists, athletes, musicians, and authors to focus on figures that reflect the past, present, and futures of the historiography of Latinidad. Each of the 52 profiles includes an illustration and text reflecting the person’s life and work, and geographical images to indicate the person’s lineage in Latin America. A standout aspect is the mix of well-known and not-so-known figures to U.S. audiences, including a spectrum of people from different social, political, class, and other identity-based backgrounds and views. The bold and colorful illustrations capture the essence of the person highlighted, in brief profiles that range from one to two pages. Reynoso-Morris’s words and Cotti’s images weave together nicely to honor and recognize the intricacies of Latines, Latin Americans, and various diasporas. The back matter includes a glossary and explanations of the use of Latine vs. Hispanic, an evolving and ongoing conversation within the communities.
VERDICT Recommended purchase for public and school library collections.
