Gr 3–5—Workmanlike presentations cover physical features, behaviors, and life cycles of shark species. One or two paragraphs of text per page present facts in prose that is clear and straightforward, if not particularly exciting. This approach works with sharks, though, since the basic information is so often fascinating. Each spread includes one photograph, ranging from half page to larger than full page. These are mostly effective and occasionally excellent, though some serve more as filler rather than true textual support. Only a few photos show sharks actually capturing prey. Several spreads feature question-and-answer segments that typically provide specific details related to the more general text. A concluding "Sharks and People" chapter looks at shark attack potential and conservation status.
