Gr 1-4–In a true story of the growth of compassion, two young brothers in Delhi, India, were inspired by the raptors they saw in the sky, called black kites. They loved to watch them soar around the city and their father taught them that by feeding the birds bits of raw meat, that the birds would protect them from bad luck. The boys were deeply disturbed one day to see a black kite get tangled in a special kind of glass-coated string that was widely used for kite battles (it has been since banned but is still around). While the boys were seeking help for the bird, it died in their arms. They were determined to try to help black kites that were injured and learned from other bird owners and veterinarians. They now have a bird sanctuary in their home. This nonfiction book has themes of environmental protection, determination, helping others, and following one’s passions. The stunning illustrations feature brightly colored watercolor-like scenes, providing a magical perspective of the birds and the skies above Delhi. Readers who like reading stories about animal rescue will enjoy this book.
VERDICT This would be a first choice for any library looking for new nonfiction picture books. The artwork and the story are inspiring and beautiful.
