PreS-Gr 2—Beginning readers can practice skills while exploring spring-related topics. Animals explains how warmer weather encourages an end to hibernation and heralds bird migration north. Plants considers the role of sunshine and rain to spur growth. Pond and Farm show changes for plants and animals in specific environments. Earth Day aptly describes the holiday, including how everyone can participate. On the other hand, St. Patrick's Day does little more than connect Irish culture to examples of green items and corned beef. Much of Weather duplicates information found in other volumes in the series. Each book includes directions for a craft project, but only Pond provides a photo of the finished item for guidance.
VERDICT Select volumes as needed to supplement available resources about specific topics.
These books discuss how various animals and a pond ecosystem respond to the coming of spring. Although the abbreviated, choppy texts and colorful nature photos provide scant information, the books can serve as springboards for classroom discussion on topics such as hibernation and migration. Craft projects are included, but the instructions are unclear and adult assistance may be required. Reading list. Glos., ind.
