K-Gr 2–In this translation of the I Can Read comic Snap! Crunch! Munch?, a little boy is ready for dinner with his extended family. They are happy to be together for dinner, but many are picky eaters. As he details each relative’s favorite dish, he imagines them as different animals with similar food preferences: a lion, elephant, flamingo, giraffe, and rabbits. He even imagines himself as a wolf. The family bonds over their shared love for dessert and dinner. Castillo introduces emerging readers to graphic novels through a mix of panel layouts, text box styles, and speech bubbles. The use of bright and neutral colors highlights the contrasts in the comic and mirrors the joy and humor in the story. This book is a great introduction to onomatopoeia as they are present not only in the title but also throughout to emphasize key moments.
VERDICT This onomatopoeia-filled translation about picky eaters and family bonding is great for emerging comics fans and story times.
