K-Gr 3–This is a darling way to think about words, numbers, anthropomorphous animals, all in preschool-friendly colors. It’s a perfect world and everyone and everything is in its place, until one attempts to match concept to objects. The word two appears above the heads of a pair of mice, but also close to one of three flowers. The word three appears by three frolicking bears, but a cat on a unicycle is juggling three clubs; meanwhile, also on the page are two trees, unlabeled. In a test setting, one sharp-eyed first grade pointed out the five flowers on a page about the words six, seven, and eight. An octopus has eight tentacles carrying nine green apples but only the word nine is mentioned. Shape? The largest drum in a kit is labeled circle but not the cymbal nor the tires on the wheelchair on the same page. Family? The mom rabbit is identified by the pregnancy bulge, obliterating families and their different paths, The attitude is pitch perfect for the age group, so use this book for story hours and sharing, where an educator or caretaker can help children distinguish among the ideas--when they match and when they do not.
VERDICT A joyful book, but not a useful one for learning the 365 words included.
