An excellent collection of poetry that is an insightful read on the Black experience. A great choice for high school libraries and fans of honest and thought-provoking poetry.
Full of beautiful prose and characters who laugh in the face of toxic masculinity, Miller’s debut has a lot of promise—especially in terms of BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ representation—but uneven pacing and overly complicated plotlines keep it from its full potential.
The premise certainly grabs interest, but a lack of strong supporting characters, slow plot development, and a meandering resolution will frustrate even the most patient readers. Not recommended.
While June is well on his way to being a must-read YA author, this book is not there yet. Recommended purchase for large collections and where LGBTQIA+ books are popular.
A worthy addition to library collections, especially for those looking to expand their mental health collections and add more titles featuring LGBTQIA characters.
