The design aesthetics, accessible writing style, and broad but detailed overview of information make this title a valuable addition to any teen nonfiction collection.
A good fit for teen fans of series such as Sara Shepard’s “The Amateurs” and Maureen Johnson’s “Truly Devious” who are looking for more front-and-center LGBTQIA+ representation, but likely to leave some dissatisfied.
Language, violence, and sexual content will likely attract bans and challenges, but it’s a worthwhile fight, as Bush’s social realism combined with insightful representation will appeal strongly to teens eager to see themselves and their struggles represented accurately, particularly those teens who may have been steered toward athletics despite academic potential.
While these titles provide information competently, they are unlikely to ignite any spark. Purchasers should consider based on the needs of the collection.
